  1. Fecal samples were taken over the entire observation period according to the group affiliation of the calves. Profiles were defined by the genes stx 1 , stx 2 , eae and ehxA and the numbers of different STEC profiles detectable in single fecal samples were recorded, whereby isolates with the same STEC gene profile within a single fecal sample were counted once.
  2. aAll isolates were initially stx-positive as their selection was based on the detection of stx by colony hybridization.
