  1. *Gentamicin protection assays were performed in CLEC213 cells using mCherry labeled bacteria, at MOI 100 for LA5 and MOI 1000 for 287/91 to obtain a sufficient number of intracellular bacteria. Extracellular bacteria were killed with 100 μg.mL-1 gentamicin and stained in green in order to differentiate extracellular and intracellular bacteria through fluorescent microscopy.
  2. §Number of bacteria per vacuole was counted for 100 vacuoles. The experiment was performed three times. Results correspond to the mean percentage of vacuoles containing 1-2, 3-5, 6-10 or ≥ 10 bacteria.
