Number of loops with necrosis for wild- type and isogenic mutants. The graph shows the total number of loops in which necrosis was present, evaluated 6 h after inoculation with a logarithmic-phase culture of the wild-type strain (WT), ΔpfoA Δplc mutant (ΔpfoA Δplc), pfoA-complemented ΔpfoA Δplc mutant (pfoA-c.), plc-complemented ΔpfoA Δplc mutant (plc-c.), double-complemented ΔpfoA Δplc mutant (double-c.) and BHI as a control in three calf intestinal loop assays. Each strain was inoculated in quintuplicate. A significant difference was found between the wild-type and the ΔpfoA Δplc double mutant (P < 0.01) and the pfoA-complemented ΔpfoA Δplc mutant (P < 0.01).
